Derry, situated in the north-west of Northern Ireland, is the second-most important city in this country and the only walled-in city in the British Islands. With its 1450 years of history, it is a significantly important center of culture and creativity. Its approximately 150.000 inhabitants are known for their strong culture of music, chant, dance and literature.
The ancient part of the city is located on the west riverside of the River Foyle, which traverses the city, although Derry is currently extending the river on both sides.
The history of Derry dates back to the VI century, where the monastery of the order of Saint Columba was founded. The name was changed to Londonderry during the colonization of Ulster in the early years of the XVII century, to which era the famous barricade surrounding the ancient part of the city dates back.
Its substantial cultural heritage includes around 100 sites of historic interest, including churches and cathedrals, parks and monuments.
The main district, know as “The Diamond” is the heart of the city, where bars, restaurants are situated, and the social life in general takes place.
