Located in the South-west of the continental Spain, next to the Morocco lands, Tenerife is one of the largest islands belonging to the Canary Archipelagus. They are all volcanic peaks in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the climate is mild in every season of the year and you can find a typical tropical vegetation. Puerto de la Cruz is the second largest tourist city on the island, with accommodation for around 30,000 tourists. The city keeps a number of buildings of great historical and artistic value such as the church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña, la Ermita de San Telmo, el castillo de San Felipe, la casa de la Aduana, and the old quay where small fishing boats are still moored.
One of the greatest attractions of el Puerto is without doubt the Lago Martianez. These series of seawater pools, integrated in a perfect way with the architecture and the vegetation of this volcanic coast, form an extraordinary spot for bathing and resting in the sun. Puerto de la Cruz beaches have an extraordinary beauty, their little dimensions and volcanic sands make it an enchanting place; the best and most known ones are "Playa Jardin" and "Martianez".
On the outskirts of the city the botanical gardens and the Loro Park are a must for the nature lovers. The botanical gardens founded in 1788 harbor an enormous number of trees and plants from every corner of the planet thanks to the special climate of Tenerife. Loro Park is a tropical garden with the largest collection of parrots in the world, a parrot show, and a giant dolphin pool.
Special dates: Carnival in Tenerife! (February - March) This world-wide famous festivity takes place all over the island, but it shines with all its splendour and magnificence in Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz. Carnival is alive on the streets with groups and processions of singing, dancing, and cheering for this year's 'Queen of the Carnival' and her royal retinue. Don't forget that for many reasons Tenerife's Carnival is judged only second to the Brazilian Rio de Janeiro one!!!
